Spend ten months teaching English in Israel alongside a select group of young adults working hand in hand with Israeli youth. Israel Pathways offers teaching fellowships in Netanya, a beachside community on Israel’s Mediterranean Coast, or Be'er Sheva, an up-and-coming Negev town with a vibrant young adult population.
The Israel Teaching Fellowship (ITF) selects 60 talented English speaking college graduates, 30 in Netanya and 30 in Be'er Sheva, for ten months of volunteering in local schools and in the community at-large. ITF participants serve as hands-on educators in classrooms and in small group settings. As international fellows in a public school system, you are not just there to teach, but serve as leaders in making your community a better to place to live, learn, play, and grow.
After subsidies from Israel’s Ministry of Education and MASA Israel, the cost is only $1,000. This covers all accommodations, meals, programming, skills training, Hebrew language instruction, and international flights to and from Israel - It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
Orientation & Training
During the first three weeks of the program, Fellows partake in intensive training created and lead by Israel’s Ministry of Education. Top educators from across Israel come together to build your teaching skills and prepare you the Israeli classroom experience. Throughout the program, Fellows will also receive intensive Hebrew instruction in an “Ulpan” – a language course offered for all levels of Hebrew fluency, from beginners to advanced speakers.
Core Programming
After your training, you will work hands on with your peers, fostering English education in the local community. As a Fellow, you will volunteer 25-30 hours a week in a public school working in small group tutoring sessions in your city. In addition to teaching English, ITF Fellows choose a secondary community volunteer project for approximately 5 hours a week – with different options available according to your background and interests.
About Netanya
Netanya is a small coastal city of 183,000 residents located 18 miles north of Tel Aviv. Named for American philanthropist Nathan Strauss, the city encompasses a wide and colorful mix of people. Many of Netanya’s residents originate from Jewish communities in North Africa, Ethiopia, and the former Soviet Union. Netanya is also the home to Israel’s largest population of Persian (Iranian) Jews.
Netanya’s nine miles of white sand beaches rank among the most beautiful in the world, drawing many visitors from Europe and beyond year-round. Situated between Haifa and Tel Aviv, Netanya serves as a vital social and economic link between the northern and southern parts of the country.
About Beer Sheva
Founded in the 10th century BCE, Beer Sheva is known as the capital of the Negev Desert, and is one of Israel's fastest growing cities. Beer Sheva boasts a population of 193,400 and is an hour train ride from Tel Aviv. Much like Netanya, many of Beer Sheva's residents are immigrants from Arab countries, Ethipoia and the Former Soviet Union, but also has the largest population of Jews from India. Additionally, Beer Sheva is also close to several Bedouin communities.
Beer Sheva is home to Ben Gurion University of the Negev, which has a very large student population. Almost 20% of residents of Beer Sheva are between the ages of 20-29!
Travel Experiences
In additional to classroom and volunteer experiences, ITF also includes a series of excursions all around Israel. Our fellows travel to the Galilee, the Negev Desert, Jerusalem, and more staying in hotels and guest houses the entire time. These trips are scheduled throughout the program and are designed to expose you to modern Israeli society, the many layers of Jewish history, and the natural beauty of Israel's country-side. These outings will not only give you deeper look into life in Israel, but will also be fun!
Every trip is led by our own professional guides, and all of the travel expenses are included. Evening programs such as speakers, presentations, and organized social nights are also scheduled periodically. Outside of scheduled programming, nights, weekends, and holidays are free for you to explore Israel on your own!
